Rustenburg, North West - The two policemen who were killed at Lonmin's Marikana mine in the North West earlier this week have been identified.

National police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said the officers were Warrant Officer Tsietsi Hendrik Monene from the public order police in Mpumalanga and Warrant Officer SR Lepaaku from the North West public order police.

The two officers were killed on Monday afternoon during violent protests at the mine.

More than 40 people have been killed since violence erupted over the last week. - Sapa
