South African maize futures finished the session little changed on Wednesday in a lacklustre session, with market players awaiting the key US government crop report due out on Thursday.

The report provides forecasts of supply and demand for major US and global crops.

The near-dated May 2012 white maize contract slipped R2 to R2,090 per ton, but July 2012 white maize edged up R3 to R2,056 per ton, and September 2012 white maize gained R12 to R2,091 per ton, according to preliminary I-Net Bridge data.

The near-dated May 2012 yellow maize contract was R10 in the red at R1,995 per ton, the July 2012 yellow maize contract was unchanged at R2,010 per ton and the September 2012 yellow maize contract climbed R4 to R2,038 per ton.

The May wheat contract slipped R9 to R2,740 per ton, July wheat lost R5 to R2,793 per ton, while the September 2012 wheat contract lifted R6 to R2,855 per ton.

US soybean futures closed lower on Tuesday, extending a recent decline as market participants exited positions to reduce risk ahead of the US Department of Agriculture report, Dow Jones Newswires reported.
