South Africa is expected to produce 11.7 million tonnes of maize in the 2011/12 production season, up from 10.36 million tonnes in the previous season, the government's Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said on Tuesday.

The CEC said in its first production forecast for the season that the maize crop will consist of an estimated 6.8 million tonnes of white maize and 4.9 million tonnes of yellow.

The committee raised its estimate of the 2011 wheat crop to 1.905 million tonnes from 1.85 million tonnes last month. - Reuters
