Cape Town - The Pick n Pay School Club presented the Hero Award to Keschrie Booysen, a Grade 5 learner from Philadelphia Primary School in Atlantis, for exceptional writing and narration of her own story and winning the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) Story Stars Competition.

The Hero Awards was set up by the Pick n Pay School Club as an initiative to encourage good behaviour and attitudes in schools by celebrating and rewarding everyday acts of heroism in the classroom, playground, sports field or in their community.

Andre Nel, the head of sustainability at Pick n Pay, noted that they wanted to commemorate this learner’s phenomenal achievement.

“It’s important to celebrate these achievements amongst our nation’s children so that we further motivate them to always work on reaching their goals and dreams. We are very proud of young Keschrie and her talent,” says Nel.

Apart from the main prize from the WCED, Booysen was handed her Hero Award certificate and badge in a ceremony attended by her grade, as well as a R1000 PnP gift card.

Ms Loubscher, the teacher who encouraged Booysen to enter the WCED competition, was also given a R500 gift card.

Booysen’s classmates were able to celebrate her success with gifts from the Pick n Pay School Club, which included Easter eggs and PnP pencil cases made from recycled plastic bottles.

The school’s Grade 1 learners were also surprised with stationery hampers, valued at over R200.

The Pick n Pay School Club is a network of more than 3000 schools, including Philadelphia Primary School, that receive free educational resources every year to aid learners and teachers.
