Cape Town - The Gqeberha Regional Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape, kidnapping and robbery of a 14-year-old-boy.

The accused, Anele Kakaza, had accosted the teenager in Motherwell and threatened him with a knife while on his way home from playing soccer in 2021, according to police reports.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the 14-year-old was then forced to go with the accused, where he was robbed of his jacket and raped at the back of a community hall.

Kakaza was arrested on the same day while he was walking on the street by the police Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

On Wednesday he was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 15 years for kidnapping and 5 years for robbery. The robbery and the kidnapping sentences will run concurrent to the life sentence.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner major-general Vuyisile Ncata welcomed the sentencing handed down to the accused.

“The expertise of our Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is critical in ensuring that perpetrators of rape and sexual abuse are removed from society. I commend the sterling work of the investigating officer and the prosecuting authority,” he said.

Ncata said the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is pivotal in ensuring that justice is served on perpetrators of rape and sexual abuse.
