Cape Town - Police have appealed for the public’s assistance to help locate a suspect in a rape and abduction case investigation involving an eight-year-old girl.

Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said the Cape Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit had released an identikit of the man following the alleged abduction and rape incident in April this year.

“On Monday, April 11, 2022, at midday, an 8-year-old girl in school uniform was walking from her mother’s work to her home in Maitland. In 1st Avenue, an unknown silver-in-colour vehicle, driven by an African male approached her, lured her into his car and drove to Ndabeni Road under the bridge where he raped her. The victim does not know the suspect.

“He is a black male believed to be in his thirties or early forties, light of complexion,1.80 meters tall, of medium build, with brown hair, and spoke Shona,” said Van Wyk.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the man in the identikit is requested to contact investigating officer Det-Sgt Bennito Tobi on 082 522 1086 or Crime Stop ‪08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via the MySAPS App from your smart phone.

“On Thursday, Operation Lockdown members received information while patrolling in Khayelitsha on foot. They made their way to an address in Mninawa Street and found a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition and seven rounds were hidden under a bed. A 43-year-old male was arrested and charged for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is due to appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate’s court on Monday (tomorrow),” said Van Wyk.

In Operation Vutha Hawe, an initiative by SAPS detectives to trace wanted suspects, 539 people were arrested for serious offences such as murder, attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary and domestic violence.

Van Wyk said Operation Hawe is an ongoing initiative where “inroads are being made to apprehend and charge wanted suspects”.

“In addition, Operation Restore, and other SAPS-related initiatives led to the seizure of 30 firearms, 424 rounds of ammunition, 1 795 Mandrax tablets, 725 Ecstacy tablets, 1 020gm Crystal Meth and 19 147gm dagga,” said Van Wyk.
