Cape Town – Manenberg police have arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly made a video showing himself allegedly raping a dog.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said a case of bestiality was under investigation.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court once he has been charged.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA senior inspectors were alerted by concerned residents after the footage was posted online and went viral on social media.

According to SPCA chief inspector Jaco Pieterse, the “sickening footage” showed a man engaged in an act of bestiality.

The inspectors investigated the incident and within hours they had traced the man to his home in Manenberg.

The SPCA lodged a criminal complaint against the man for bestiality and animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, which makes it an offence to ill-treat, torture or terrify any animal.

Pieterse said on Thursday the dog, a small breed, was removed from the property.

“In addition to evidence of having suffered horrendous sexual abuse, the puppy was also confined to a small wooden box and forced to live in otherwise deplorable conditions. The dog underwent a full veterinary assessment at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and will remain in safekeeping,” he said.
