Durban — UMlazi class of 2024 got a vote of confidence as KwaZulu-Natal Education Department and oil company Shell Downstream South Africa (SDSA) launched their bursary programme for pupils from uMlazi schools that excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subjects (STEM) at Ndukwenhle High School in uMlazi on Tuesday.
In the same breath, the KZN education MEC Sipho Hlomuka rang the bell for the 20 days to the final National Senior Certificate examinations.
Addressing pupils and teachers from Ndukwenhle High School, Menzi High School and Velabahleke High School under the uMlazi District, MEC Hlomuka encouraged pupils to grasp the opportunity with both hands.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by his generation, Hlomuka urged pupils not to take their current opportunities for granted.
“Do not forget God in all that you do,” he advised, stressing the importance of academic diligence as the countdown to final exams continues.
With only 20 days left, he encouraged pupils to uphold the standards set by previous pupils and aim for distinction.
During the event, Hlomuka energised the audience by leading them in the song “Phakamis' uSeven,” urging them to strive for a level seven pass.
“Today, credentials matter more than ever.
“Gone are the days when positions were given to those who were merely vocal or fought with weapons. Every learner deserves quality learning, and this bursary programme is a step towards that," Hlomuka said.
Aluwani Museisi, Country Chairman of Shell Downstream South Africa, echoed Hlomuka's sentiments, highlighting the company’s commitment to nation-building.
“We do not view the community as a responsibility but as a privilege,” he said.
Museisi emphasised the importance of partnerships between government and corporate sectors, stating that such collaborations are vital for societal growth.
Reflecting the department's commitment to education and community development, Hlomuka expressed deep gratitude towards Shell South Africa.
“Your generosity will empower countless learners,” he said.
uMlazi District Director, Busi Mahlambi urged pupils to utilise their remaining time effectively and said she was sure that the class of 2024 would obtain 100% She further called the class of 2024 champions.
Principal of Ndukwenhle High School, Siyanda Mbonambi lauded the initiative, noting that it sets pupils on their path to success.
The school, boasting a 100% pass rate last year, has seen its pupil numbers swell from 1 210 to 1 500 for the upcoming year.
Out of the 80 learners gearing up for exams, all hands are on deck to ensure their success, with ongoing revision sessions until exams are over.
Nozipho Ndlanya, Principal of Menzi High, reinforced the collective effort in exam preparations, emphasising the crucial role of parents and tackling challenges like drug abuse. She encouraged parental engagement and utilisation of government programmes, such as social workers, to aid pupils facing difficulties.
Pupils expressed their gratitude and eagerness to excel in their studies under the new programme.
Velabahleke pupil Fatima Khanyile encouraged all matriculants to focus and show the rest of the province that they are gold.
Ntokozo Shandu from Menzi High voiced her honour at receiving the bursary and pledged to give her best in the upcoming exams.
Similarly, Lwandile Ngcongwane from Velabahleke High shared his excitement of being one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a commercial pilot, dedicating his free time to study and reading.
