Durban — Five men have been convicted for the 2018 robbery of Mayuri’s Jewellers in Phoenix.

KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the Verulam Magistrate’s Court convicted the five, Siyanda Mthethwa, 30, Siyanda Blose, 35, Philani Ngwane, 27, Mbongeni Mlotshwa, 26 and Siboniso Ndlovu, 24, of robbing the jewellery store in February 2018 in the Phoenix area.

“They were convicted of three counts of robbery each,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

On the day of the robbery, she said, the men robbed Mayuri’s Jewellers, a store based in the Phoenix Plaza shopping centre; and fled with approximately R2 million worth of jewellery.

They were spotted by an off-duty policeman who pursued them. Soon other police officers joined the chase and the suspects were arrested with the jewellery still in their possession, she added.

“The men were remanded into custody until January 23, 2023, for sentencing proceedings,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

In 2019, IOL reported that it is believed the men entered the store on February 9, 2018, and assaulted staff before making off with jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Two days after the robbery, six men were arrested in a high-speed chase with police on the M25 Curnick Ndlovu Highway freeway near KwaMashu.

Three of the suspects were injured.

A year later two more suspects were arrested in Umlazi by members of the KZN Provincial Task Team.

Police are still searching for the remaining 3 suspects on the run.

All eight remain in police custody and are being held at Westville Prison.
