Durban - Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital has received medical support from the SANDF after components of two field hospitals were deployed.

The SANDF said the South African Military Health Service members from the 8 Medical Battalion Group deployed the components of two field hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

“This capability is placed at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in uMlazi, Durban, to provide real-time medical support including an intensive care unit and pharmacy,” the SANDF said.

The SANDF said the deployment was under the current Operation Chariot, which was assisting flood-affected communities in KZN.

Meanwhile, IOL reported that the Department of Health confirmed that there was still no piped water, and the hospital was making do with alternative arrangements.

The hospital has been without piped water for weeks.

On Tuesday night, the eThekwini Municipality said water had been restored to the hospital after repairs to a major pipeline near Umlaas Canal were completed.

It was damaged during the recent floods.

Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said neighbouring areas were receiving water gradually as the system built up.

“The floods severely damaged infrastructure, which resulted in the hospital and some parts of uMlazi struggling with water supply,” Mayisela said.

“Technicians have been working tirelessly to repair the pipeline. Now that the repairs are complete the water has started to flow through the pipeline, filling the system.”

Mayisela said that as the day progressed, the system would build up and start to supply the higher lying areas of uMlazi.

“Water is expected to be fully restored in areas supplied by this pipeline in a day or two,” Mayisela said.

He said the team would continue monitoring the system until it was fully functional.
