Durban — Former Mariannhill SAPS Sergeant Ayanda Doctor Ntombela appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and kidnapping on Tuesday.

Ntombela, who resigned from the SAPS, is charged with the alleged murder and kidnapping of Sihle Mtshare, 27, as well as defeating the ends of justice.

Ntombela is alleged to have taken Mtshare in for questioning on August 21, 2022. Mtshare disappeared thereafter and his body was later found in Camperdown.

The case was adjourned to next year for further investigation.

Ntombela is out on R20 000 bail with conditions.

On Tuesday, the court heard that the post-mortem report and two witness statements had been filed, “the section 205 report, one witness statement, as well as a decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), were still outstanding”.

With regard to the theft it is alleged that on September 7, 17 days after Mtshare’s disappearance, Ntombela returned his phone to his family after being requested to do so by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) investigators.

Mtshare’s family said the officer could not specify why he was arresting Mtshare, however, when they went to look for him the following day at the Mariannhill police station nobody knew about his case.

The court previously heard in Ntombela’s bail bid that he had taken police to where a sniffer dog found Mtshare’s body.
