Durban — A gathering of more than a hundred people in Ballito paid tribute to Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, who died three years ago. The event, held at her residence, celebrated the life of the revered academic, politician and social advocate.

At the event, Dr Sibongile Nhlapho, from the Progressive Women’s Movement of SA (PWMSA), said Mkhize held numerous esteemed positions, including deputy minister of telecommunications and postal services, deputy minister of higher education and minister of home affairs.

She was also the national convenor of the PWMSA and the ANC Women’s League national treasurer. At the time of her death, she was deputy minister in the presidency for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

She was also a prominent leader in various organisations, serving as chairperson of Unesco and the Nelson Mandela University Council, and as a member of the Council on Higher Education.

“Her commitment to women’s rights, education, and social justice left a profound impact on South Africa. She championed access to higher education for historically disadvantaged groups and significantly contributed to psychological research and policy development. Her legacy continues to inspire current and future generations of leaders and activists,” said Nhlapho.

Among the dignitaries at the event were Dr Zweli Mkhize, Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa, Inkosi Zuzifa Buthelezi, and prominent figures such as Moses Tembe and his wife, Bukhosibemvelo Zulu Tembe.
