Durban — Police are investigating charges of murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and robbery after a shoot-out between police, private security and suspected robbers in which three people were killed in Durban over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said it was claimed that on Sunday, at 11am, six armed men entered a store on Market Road and physically attacked the store manager after demanding cash.

“During the process, police officers from Durban Central, together with security guards responded and a shoot-out ensued.

“Two security guards and one suspect were fatally wounded during the attack. Two police officers sustained cuts on their heads as suspects shot at the police vehicle,” Gwala said.

She said that charges of murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and robbery were opened at Durban Central police station for investigation.

On Sunday, the Daily News reported that three people were shot and killed while three others were left injured during an incident on Sunday morning in Durban.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that three people have been killed and three others seriously injured in a shooting incident on Market Road in the market area just before 11.30am on Sunday.

Jamieson said that ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find the SAPS already in attendance. A quick survey of the scene was conducted and immediately more ambulances, as well as advanced life support paramedics, were dispatched to the scene.

“Three people, including two security guards were found with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite advanced life support and paramedics' attempts to resuscitate them, there was nothing more paramedics could do for them and they were declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.

“Another three people, including a security guard and a SAPS member, sustained serious gunshot wounds and were stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to a nearby Durban hospital for further treatment.”
