Munich - Child car seats mounted to face backwards offer more protection than other models.

In the event of an accident, backwards-facing car seats reduce the trauma to the child's neck fivefold. That is the result of the latest car child seat test conducted by the German automobile club ADAC, situated in Munich.

A total of 17 different models were tested and eight were awarded the grade "good".

The tests focused on safety and ease of operation.

According to the testers, at least one "good" seat is available for each age group.

For example, in the class of seats for children of up to one and a half, the following models were awarded the "good" mark:

- Storchenmuhle maximum sp, €105(about R800)

- Chicco Autofix Plus

- Romer Babysafe Plus Isofix.

Overall, the seats have been made safer according to the ADAC, but can still give rise to faulty use which can prove fatal to children in the event of an accident. - Sapa-dpa
