The International Association of Infant Massage runs courses for parents once a week over four weeks, for an hour to 90 minutes.

The cost varies - depending on the venue and the trainer's travel costs - from R300 for group training or more for private sessions.

Susie Jenkins, a trainer and Johannesburg regional representative for the association, says the benefits of infant massage include:

* Relaxation and relief from physical and emotional problems, including colic, teething, constipation, restlessness and emotional distress.

* Stimulation of all bodily systems, especially nervous, immune, digestive and respiratory.

* Improved suppleness and increased quiet-alert state.

* Interaction and bonding: it promotes a nurturing relationship and helps the baby to experience positive touch. It also makes parents feel more confident in handling the baby.
