DURBAN - As the five suspects charged with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa appeared in the Gauteng High Court on Monday, Meyiwa’s brother said he did not believe that the police had the right men.

Sifiso Meyiwa, brother of the soccer star, says he believes that the five accused had been targeted to take the fall for his brother’s murder.

“They targeted these guys because they are already facing murder charges. I have evidence of everything that I am saying and I will present it to the court of law,” he said.

He said as a family they were frustrated because it had been years since his brother’s death but justice had not been served.

He further alleged that there was foul play in this case because the previous task team which had been investigating had different evidence which did not include the five suspects.

The five accused, who have been charged with Meyiwa’s murder, are Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokozisi Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli.

Ntuli was recently convicted of the murder of councillor Thami Goodwill Nyembe and Butiza Sandisa Mahlobo, Sphamandla Zungu and brothers Phiwayinkosi Zulu, Mcebisi Zulu and Sibusiso Zulu at the Esikhaleni Regional Court.

Approached for comment on Sifiso Meyiwa’s claims, national police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said he must go to court with the evidence he claimed to have.

The five suspects appeared at the Gauteng High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Monday and the trial is set to begin in April.

Meyiwa was gunned down in October 2014 in Vosloorus, east of Joburg, in the presence of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi, sister Zandi, Zandi’s boyfriend Longwe Twala, his friends Mthokozisi Twala and Tumelo Madlala.
