Durban - A family from Pietermaritzburg quickly locked themselves inside a bedroom of their Allandale home after a thief broke into the house in the early morning hours of Saturday morning.

Mi7 National Group director Colin David said they received a distress call from a client just after 4am on Saturday morning.

David said the client reported that he had locked himself and his family in a bedroom after a suspect broke into the house.

He said while the client was speaking to the Mi7 operator, the suspect was still on the property.

“Mi7 Control Room Operators worked quickly to dispatch nearby Armed Response units to the premises and stayed on the line to help calm the client,” said David.

According to David, when Mi7 reaction officers arrived at the house, they found a ladder standing at the rear of the premises.

“It was discovered that the suspect gained access via a window, and Mi7 Reaction Officers got into the premises the same way,” he said.

David said reaction officers found the suspect inside the house and he was promptly apprehended.

“No physical harm came to the client,” he added.

He said the matter was handed over to the police for further investigation.

Earlier this month Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said a suspect was trying to avoid arrest by hiding in the roof of a Durban business premises.

Powell said the Emergency Dispatch Centre received multiple alarm activations from a business premises on North Coast Road in the Briardene area.

He said multiple armed response officers were immediately dispatched and arrived on the scene within minutes.

“Upon searching the property one suspect was noticed hiding in the roof of the property. The suspect was immediately arrested. Upon searching the suspect, stolen copper pipes and breaking implements were found in his possession,” said Powell.

Powell said the suspect was handed over to the Greenwood Park SAPS for further investigation and processing
