Minato, Tokyo - Honda has confirmed that two new downsized turbopetrol engines will be part of the model line-up for the 10th generation Civic. The new Civic, which was announced at the Frankfurt motor show in September, is set to be released in Europe from early 2017.
The first new VTec Turbo engine, a 2-litre four, was launched in 2015 in the current Civic Type R; it's quoted at 228kW, giving the latest Type R a 0-100 getaway time of 6.7 seconds. The new engines are a 1-litre three rated at 93kW and 200Nm, and a 1.5-litre four, for which Honda quotes 148kW and 260Nm.
NEW ARCHITECTURE
They form part of what the company calls its Earth Dreams Technology range and are based on completely new architecture, featuring Honda's signature VTec variable valve lift and timing, combined with direct fuel-injection, a variable capacity oil pump, idle stop and a new turbocharger design with a very low moment of inertia for quicker response.
The result, says Honda, is dynamic performance with a good balance of top-end power and mid-range torque, allied to significantly lower fuel-consumption than a naturally aspirated engine delivering the same outputs.
