In contrast to most German tuning houses with their emphasis on aero kits and fancy trim, these Ford-approved tuning upgrade kits by UK performance specialist Mountune won't add anything more visible than a discreet badge to your Fiesta or Focus ST - and even then it's up to you whether you stick it on.

What they will do, however, is give your car a serious beef injection - without affecting your warranty, as long as the upgrade is installed by a Ford dealer.

In the case of the two-litre Focus ST, the £1225 (R18 250) kit includes a cast-alloy inlet duct, a high-flow air-filter element, a larger alloy intercooler and special ECU calibration, boosting quoted outputs from 184 to 203kW and, even more significantly, from 360 to 400nm.

That, says Mountune, will knock more than half a second off the Focus ST's 0-100 sprint time, cutting it to less than six seconds, while acceleration through the gears from 50-100km/h is down from 5.7 to 4.9 seconds.

FASTER FIESTA

Ford is also offering an official Mountune upgrade for the Fiesta ST at £599 (R8925), consisting of a re-modelled air box base with secondary inlet duct, a high-flow filter element and special ECU calibration. That, according to Mountune, will increase its outputs from 132kW and 240Nm to 158kW and 320Nm, blasting the Fiesta ST from 0-100 in just 6.7 seconds, compared to 6.9 on the standard version, and improving fourth-gear acceleration from 50-100km/h by 0.7sec to just 5.7 seconds.

Any of the UK's 120 Mountune-approved Ford can kit your ST; it takes less than 90 minutes on a Focus and under an hour on a Fiesta. Sadly, Ford SA says it has no plans to release the Mountune kits in South Africa.
