Toyota South Africa has extended its entry-level Aygo range with the addition of a three-door model, aimed at those keen to lose the back doors for a R6000 saving and, perhaps, more youthful buyers that appreciate the slightly sportier three-door design.

The Aygo three-door comes in at R106 100 for the 'Fresh' model and R116 500 for the 'Wild' (compared to a respective R112 100 and R122 500 for the five-door equivalents).

Besides losing two doors, the rest of the package is much the same, with the Fresh packing kit such as air conditioning, height adjustable power steering, dual front airbags and ABS brakes and the Wild adding an audio system, electric front windows, adjustable driver seat and 14-inch alloy wheels.

Beneath the bonnet, you'll find a surprisingly entertaining 998cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 50kW at 6000rpm and 93Nm at 3600rpm, and boasting a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 4.6 litres per 100km.

The three-door body style is a unique selling point in this city car class, as is the standard four-year/60 000km service plan, but it could still struggle against the new Kia Picanto that offers a more modern and better equipped package for the money.
