Peugeot's facelifted 308 hatchback has landed on our shores and it's even a little cheaper, with most models seeing a price reduction of around R10 000.

Of course, the new prices come with new nomenclature too, the 1.6 Comfort now known as 'Access' while the 'Premium' models become 'Active'. GTI and CC (coupe-cabriolet) models retain their existing designations.

The most prominent changes to the 308's styling occur at the front end, where smoother headlights and a more compact air intake create a much cleaner look that's more in tune with Peugeot's latest styling themes as seen on the new 508.

Designers have also applied some subtle touch-ups to the rear end. As at the front, the tailgate features Peugeot's revised Lion emblem and a revised bumper is in place.

New alloy wheels feature across the range, with 1.6 Access and Active models featuring 16-inch, seven-spoke wheels, the 2.0 HDi sporting 17-inchers and the GTI asserting its presence with 18-inch alloys. Changes to the cabin have been kept on the discreet side, with the dashboard gaining a new instrument binnacle.

Engine choices remain the same, with entry-level cars coming with Peugeot's naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine with 88kW and 160Nm on tap while the 1.6 Active auto gets the turbocharged version of this engine, with 115kW and 240Nm available. The flagship GTI retains its 147kW/275Nm version of the aforementioned turbopetrol while the only diesel derivative sports the 110kW/340Nm 2-litre HDi motor.

Specification is generous across the range with even the cheapest model, the Access, sporting cruise control, electric mirrors and windows and a trip computer in addition to the expected air conditioning, remote central locking and CD/MP3 sound system. The safety equation includes dual front and side airbags and ABS.

The 1.6 Active adds automatic windscreen wipers and headlights to the equation as well as climate control, USB slot and curtain airbags while the 2.0 HDi active adds ESP stability control.
