In October 2010 a standard Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion entered the record books after covering 2444.2km on a tank of fuel, averaging 3.38 litres/100km.
New VW has added a BlueMotion model to the new Passat range which it claims will do even better.
Following its world launch in January 2011, the new "standard " Passat bettered the fuel-consumption figures of the previous BlueMotion model and the maker says this latest BlueMotion development, first shown at the Geneva motor show in March, raises the bar even further.
At the heart of the matter is a modified 1.6-litre, common rail TDI engine developing 77kW, coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, with auto stop-start and battery regeneration system.
The new BlueMotion also has further modifications to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag, including low rolling-resistance tyres, suspension lowered by 15mm at the front and 7.5mm at the rear, a compact rear spoiler, and a revised grille and underbody panel to minimise drag.
Lightweight, aerodynamic 16" steel rims are standard; special 17" "Buenos Aires" alloys are an option.
Volkswagen says these modifications result in an expected average fuel consumption of 4.1 litres/100km in the conbined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.
But this is still a well-specced family car, with curtain airbags, stability control, auto aircon, power windows, electronic parking brake, radio/CD player and an iPod port. Option include fatigue detection system with cruise control, park assist and high-beam assist.
VWSA says it is looking at bringing in the Passat BlueMotion as a replacement for the current 103kW Passat 1.8TDI Comfortline but that no decision has been made. As soon we know, so will you.
