Subaru STIs beefed up

The Japanese car buying public have been treated to three new versions of the Subaru Impreza STI. These are the spec C, tS and tS A-line editions that offer various engine, chassis and weight reduction mods.

The STI spec C hatchback features all three of the aforementioned upgrades. On the engine front, the twin scroll turbocharger gets new ball bearings and the ECU program also gets some bespoke tuning.

As a result, the 2-litre boxer motor (different to the 2.5-litre sold in SA) now boasts outputs of 227kW at 6400rpm and 430Nm at 4400rpm.

The chassis has also been treated to further STI tinkering, as engineers reinforced the front cross member and swopped the Torsen rear limited slip diff for a mechanical type. Even the steering has been beefed up, with an increased oil flow volume in the power steering system.

Finally, the vehicle's weight has been reduced via an aluminium bonnet, laminar window glass and a downsized battery

Subaru also announced the WRX STI tS (manual) and WRX STI A-Line tS (automatic) editions, which are based on the four-door Impreza STI but get some unique equipment that makes them lighter and more agile.

The new models are equipped with various suspension mods, while a carbon roof and aluminium bonnet are in place to save weight.

Other features include a front under spoiler, newly designed STI 18-inch alloys, side sill plates with the 'tS' logo, special 'tS' front and rear ornaments, a bespoke STI rear spoiler and inside it has an engine start button.

For power, the tS gets the upgraded 227kW 2-litre, while the A-Line makes do with the familiar 221kW 2-litre.
