Anybody would think the Toyota FT-86 was Italian, the way its launch has been leaked piecemeal on to the internet over the past few months - which may actually be a backhanded compliment to Toyota; it's very seldom indeed that the launch of a Japanese car arouses interest this intense from petrolheads around the world.
These latest driblets of information come from what the publisher says is a scan of official brochure for the Japanese-market 2012 FT-86.
According the that, Toyota's new rear-wheel-drive coupé is 4240mm long, 1775mm wide and only 1285mm high, on a 2570mm wheelbase.
In its home market the FT-86 will have a Subaru two-litre flat-four boxer engine delivering 147kW at 7000 revs and 205Nm at 6600rpm. Those figures are expected to stay the same for the 'global' spec FT-86 to be sold outside Japan (including South Africa, we're pleased to be able to confirm) - and its re-badged North American twin the Scion FR-S.
According to the spec sheet in the brochure, the FT-86 will be available in Japan with a choice of two spec levels (although it gives no details), either of which can be had with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission.
What it does say is that the entry-level version weighs 1230kg with a manual 'box and 1250kg in auto flavour, while each transmission is quoted at eight litres per 100km on the Japanese JC08 driving cycle.
The second, 'lightweight' trim tips the scales at 1210kg (manual) or 1230kg (auto), and burns 7.7 litres per 100km if you do the shifting or 7.8 litres per 100km if the car does it.
There's no word yet from Toyota SA as to which versions we'll get in South Africa but it has been confirmed that the FT-86 will be coming here shortly after its international launch early in 2012.
