Toyota has suffered quite an image-battering its over massive recalls of recent times - and the pain doesn’t seem to be stopping.
Toyota is recalling 106 000 first-generation Prius hybrids around the globe for faulty steering caused by a nut that may come loose. One minor accident suspected of being related to the problem has been reported in the USA.
This latest recall affects 48 000 cars in Japan, starting with the first Prius models that went on sale in 1997, and those manufactured through 2003.
Company spokesman Paul Nolasco said that the recall also affects 58 000 vehicles sold abroad, including 52 000 Prius cars in the USA, 1200 in the UK and 800 in Germany. South Africans needn’t worry as this original Prius model was never sold over here.
Toyota says the loose nut in the electric-power steering can cause the vehicle, if operated over a long time, to steer with too much force. -Sapa-AP
