Toyota's new prototype battery car will make its European debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Based on the iQ city car, the EV prototype represents Toyota's vision for short-range, sustainable mobility, using electrical components originally developed as part of its hybrid drive technology, combining the iQ's urban-friendly maneuverability with zero tailpipe emissions and silent electric running.

The electric iQ has a newly developed, flat lithium-ion battery under its floor that avoids compromising either boot space or passenger accommodation but still provides enough charge to give the car a 100km range.

It'll be tested on European roads in 2011, with a potential market introduction through a leasing programme in 2012. Toyota has already announced its plans to sell the car in the United States and is also investigating its viability in other regions.

The EV prototype will be featured on the Toyota stand at Geneva alongside three models making their world-first appearance: the Yaris Hybrid, Prius+ and FT-86 Concept II.
