Last year news emerged that Volkswagen would be creating a high-performance 'R' version of its latest Polo.

This, along with a 4WD version of the CrossPolo, would be made feasible from a cost perspective because Audi is developing an all-wheel drive version of its A1, which shares its platform with the Polo.

Now a VW inside source has told Autocar magazine of the UK that the Polo R is not likely to see the light of day, and the main reason is due to positioning problems.

The insider mentioned that the price gap (in Europe) between the Polo GTI and Golf GTI amounts to the equivalent of just R70 000, and that it would be hard to position a Polo R between those two in price terms.

This begs the question: Is the idea of a Polo R (perhaps with a GTI engine) really pointless? Or are they scared it'll compete too closely with the Golf GTI?
