Belchamp, France - Hyper-milers eat your hearts out, this little 208 has, according to Peugeot, just set a new long-distance fuel consumption record by covering 2152km on just 43 litres of diesel, less than a tank in this car's case.
That works out to just two litres per 100km.
The feat was achieved with a perfectly standard car in the form of Peugeot's 1.6-litre BlueHDi 100 S&S model and was done under the supervision of French Type Approval Authority, UTAC.
But before you set out to beat Peugeot's hyper-milers, consider that this wasn't exactly a real-world test.
Instead a tag team of drivers spent a total of 38 hours nursing it around a test circuit in France, meaning that the average speed was in the region of 56km/h. Not only would a real highway have provided obstacles that would have eaten into that consumption but it would have been downright dangerous for everyone in its vicinity.
So does this really prove anything? Well, not in the real world really, but to a European society that's becoming increasingly obsessed with unrealistic 'official' fuel consumption figures that were obtained in a lab, Peugeot does at least have a nice little number to brag about in adverts.
Yet even though this figure would not be achievable on real roads, this low-emissions edition of the 208, complete with aerodynamic enhancements and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres, is still sure to return impressive consumption figures when faced with everyday conditions.
