Peugeot 308CC - chic, shapely and safe

This car is like so many of the girls on Durban's beaches in summer: shapely, seriously hot (especially when topless), available in some gorgeous colours, built for speed but certainly not lacking in the comfort stakes.

That said, Peugeot's eye-catching 308CC is a must-have for any sister who wants to boost her self-esteem. I mean, even in your oldest track pants and takkies, hair in a ponytail and no make-up, you'll turn heads in this car.

What I liked most was the shape and the styling - so French, so chic. Dropping the top required the push of a button, although my 11-year-old worked out which was which faster than I did (one's for closing, one for opening: sounds simple, but not if you're right-brained like me).

A wonderfully smooth and effortless six-speed manual gearbox, an equally gloriously smooth drive, absolutely fantastic visibility from its big windscreen, and even, for goodness sake, seat warmers! (But we couldn't find any cup holders).

Experience a masterpiece 75 years in the making, reads the brochure proudly. And rightly so. As the ingenious inventor of the electric retractable roof way back in 1934, Peugeot is an old - and highly experienced - hand at convertible hard tops.

With constant refinement over the generations, this natty French car-maker has created its best CC (coupe cabriolet) yet.

And jeez, it's pretty! Slinky, sexy, stylish, totally sublime when it's topless, it's a showstopper of note. Every inch a woman's car, as far as I'm concerned. Or a (male) hairdresser's, perhaps...

Certainly, I wouldn't expect to find a Vryburg farmer battling to ease his khaki-clad bulk into one of these. It just wouldn't look right.

And everything a girl could want, safetywise, is here. Anti-lock brakes help you stay in control of the steering and prevent the car from skidding under heavy braking, electronic brake pressure distribution is there to apply different amounts of braking force to individual wheels and keep the car stable, specifically if you need to brake around a corner.

Emergency brake assist will come to the rescue when you slam on anchors - hard - by applying maximum braking power in milliseconds to bring you to a halt safely.

Then there's the electronic stability programme, which detects and prevents skids, and traction control to prevent the wheels from spinning in slippery slimy conditions.

So what more does a girl need, I ask?
