Here's an overview of how the political parties are doing at the polls as the Electoral Commission of South Africa continues tallying up the votes. Results are expected to release the results on Sunday. 


12.30pm - Nationally, 98.72% of the votes have been counted, meaning 22,993 of 23,292 voting districts have been counted.

ANC - 6,301,117 (40.28%)

DA - 3, 383,803 (21.63%)

MK Party - 2,301,834 (14.71%)

EFF - 1,480,095 (9.46%)

IFP - 610,444 (3.9%)

PA - 318, 504 (2.04%)


9.30am - Nationally, 97.56% of the votes have been counted, meaning 22,723 of 23,292 voting districts have been counted.

ANC - 6 178 237 (40.11%)

DA - 3 344 528 (21.71%)

MK Party - 2 282 513 (14.82%)

EFF - 1,445,622 (9.39%)

IFP - 608 068 (3.95%)

PA - 314 527 (2.04%)


6am - With 97% of the National vote counted so far, the African National Party (ANC) remains in the lead with 6,124,376 votes (40.15%) followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 3,309,863 votes (21.70%) and Umkhonto weSizwe (MK Party) with 2,260,747 votes (14.82%).

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is in fourth position overall with 1,428,246 votes (9.36%) followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on 604,898 (3.97%) and the Patriotic Alliance with 310,190 (2.03%).

Meanwhile, the MK Party has demanded a recount of ballots. At midnight, the party’s head of elections, Muzi Ntshingila said the party is rejecting the outcome of the results displayed on the results board at the National Results Operation Centre in Midrand. He said they were demanding a manual recount of the results.

In the Western Cape, several political parties have also reportedly filed an obligation over results.
