The Umkhonto Wesizwe Party has dealt a blow to the African National Congress after scooping Ward 14 in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in municipal ward by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal, held this week.
"The MK Party in Ward 14 Ray Nkonyeni defeated the reactionary forces of the so-called Government of National Unity (GNU) despite the fact that they abused State resources and institutions to campaign in the ward," the party's Nhlamulo Ndhlela, said.
“What we have learnt from these By-Elections is that our people love and trust uMkhonto weSizwe Party. We have also learnt that members of different communities, traditional and religious leaders always want to be closely consulted on the choice of candidates our organisation selects as candidates,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has retained Wards 33, 35, 35, Kwadukuza Ward 6 and Umdoni’s Ward 15.
Party leader in KZN, Francois Rodgers, says they are encouraged by the support and trust that voters continue to have in the DA.
The ANC won one ward in each the Ray Nkonyeni and Mpofana local municipalities.
The Inkatha Freedom Party retained Ward 4, Nkandla.
