Rustenberg -

People were pouring into the Rustenburg Civic Centre on Monday for the start of the judicial inquiry into the shooting at Lonmin's platinum mine in Marikana.

Those who arrived for the public hearings, many dressed in business suits, waited in the foyer for the proceedings to start at 9am.

Several police officers were at the venue. Journalists were not being allowed in.

On Monday, all parties involved would go to the scene of the shooting of 34 striking Lonmin workers by police on August 16.

The commission's secretary said people would be allowed to point out places which they considered relevant to the inquiry. The descriptions of what happened at the site would be recorded.

Following the in loco inspection, formal sittings of the commission were expected to start at the civic centre on Wednesday.

Retired judge Ian Farlam was heading the inquiry. - Sapa
