North West - The identities of those who were injured and killed in a shooting incident near Lonmin mine in Marikana in the North West have been put on a noticeboard, police said on Saturday.

“The complete name list of the injured and deceased is on an information kiosk board outside the Lonmin mine hospital,” Captain Dennis Adriao said on Saturday.

“It has been difficult for police to track down families as many people don't have phones.”

The list also details which hospital the injured were taken to.

Adriao said the list, which was up since 7am on Saturday, would only be available during the daytime.

On Thursday, police opened fire on striking workers, some of them armed, while trying to disperse them after a week of violent protests.

The police ministry said 78 others were injured and 259 arrested.
