North West - Activists protested at Nkaneng in Wonderkop on Tuesday, during a visit by the judicial commission of inquiry into the Marikana shooting.

“We want justice to be done,” said Peter Makena, an activist from the Marikana Support Campaign.

The group flanked the road holding placards as the commissioners and police drove past on their way to Wonderkop Stadium.

They were dressed in a black T-shirts which had the words in red printed on them: “Remember the slain of Marikana”.

Said Makena: “We are protesting in silence, but when they get to the hostels we are going to toyi-toyi.”

The commission was visiting the area to inspect the living conditions of the miners and the scene of the August 16 shootings during which 34 striking miners were killed in a clash with police.

Makena said the inquiry had to uncover the truth. He said the protesters came from Johannesburg, the Vaal area, and Mpumalanga. The group proceeded to the Wonderkop Stadium singing liberation songs. - Sapa
