Phone talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump gave an impression of the start of negotiations on Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Trump said in a Truth Social post that he had spoken with Putin and asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the US negotiating team to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
"It has that impression [of the start of negotiations] ... it was successful phone call, we all want peace in Ukraine," Rutte told reporters ahead of a NATO defence ministers meeting.
Rutte added that he is in favour of peace talks and absolutely supports them, but it is important that they result in sustainable peace.
