Hopping aboard a river safari

According to Powell, a river safari involves gliding silently along the Chobe, the gentle lapping of water against the boat the only sound breaking the early morning stillness.

She said with no one else on the river besides you and nature, you’ll admire herds of elephants wading as they cross, hippos wallowing in the mud, and all sorts of wildlife stopping by for a refreshing drink in the intense afternoon sunshine.

“This is the magic of a river safari – a one-of-a-kind vantage point that brings you eye-to-eye with Africa’s magnificent wildlife. A river safari offers a completely different experience to more traditional land-based safaris.

“You’re doing more than just observing animals; you’re entering their world on their terms. Plus, it’s incredibly relaxing and hassle-free,” said Powell.

The Chobe Princess houseboats offer a rare opportunity to observe wildlife from the water, allowing animals to approach on their own terms and this method of game viewing minimised disturbance to wildlife while providing close-up encounters.

“Our position on the water lets animals come to us naturally. Our guides are extensively trained to ensure we’re not interfering with animal behaviour or movement patterns,” she said.

Catch and release fishing

Powell said that for anglers, the Chobe River is a must-visit, chockfull of tiger fish and various other species. However, fishing is not just about the catch but also about preserving the river’s delicate balance.

“Our strict catch-and-release policy helps maintain healthy fish populations. This practice supports both the ecosystem and local communities that rely on the river for sustenance,” she added.

The impact of this approach had been significant whilst commercial fishermen’s illegal use of drag nets had seen the fish population decline dramatically since 2009. But the authorities are now monitoring and patrolling this area for illegal netting to help create a safer environment for the fish to breed.

“We’re very excited to see that the fish population has recovered significantly 15 months later,” said Powell.

Farm-to-table dining

Many safari lodges and hotels in the SADC region have sustainable practices including growing their own produce.

Powell revealed that Ichingo Chobe River Lodge, a private lodge on Impalila Island, right on the flowing banks of the Chobe River, is one place where guests can indulge in food that goes beyond mere sustenance.

She said the lodge’s commitment to using locally sourced ingredients, many from the onsite garden, created a direct link between visitors and the surrounding community.

“We’ve designed our village walks to be respectful and mutually beneficial. Visitors gain insights into local traditions, while villagers benefit from economic opportunities through craft sales and cultural performances,” she said.
