Durban - It’s not just the fresh breeze that welcomes you when you walk into the Hilton Hotel, but a friendly smile from the establishment’s doorman.

Easily recognisable by his legendary jacket, doorman Obed Mbatha has been with the hotel since its opening. His hobby of collecting badges from tourists, dignitaries and celebrities visiting the hotel has made him a household name in tourism circles.

He was recently honoured with a Living Legends award, which recognises community members “while they’re still alive” for their contribution in their respective fields.

Born in Vryheid, Mbatha, who lives in KwaMashu with his family, joined the hotel in 1997 and is regarded as its “face”.

He is a pastor at the Lambert Zwane Methodist Church and worked as an electrician and a fork-lift driver before joining the hotel.

“I love what I do and I do it to the best of my ability,” he said proudly as he opened the front door of the hotel.

Mohamed Hamza, the hotel’s general manager, said: “Mbatha has been with the Hilton Durban for years.

“His support and dedication to the hotel has not gone unrecognised, and we are delighted that his contributions have been honoured.” - Independent on Saturday
