Durban - Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is one of the few grand constructions that has enjoyed a significant life after the 2010 World Cup.

Even when no soccer events are scheduled, the stadium buzzes with life and offers tourists a number of interesting diversions.

A popular activity is the Skycar, a cable-drawn glass-sided cabin which travels on tracks to the top of the arch over the stadium. From this 106m vantage point, you get a 360º view of Durban.

The cars leave every 10 minutes and you may remain on the observation platform for a maximum of 20 minutes. The system runs only in good weather.

Adults pay R55, pensioners R50, those under 12 pay R30 and kids under six ride for free.

There is also a hook for adrenalin junkies: the Big Rush, Big Swing, officially named the world’s tallest swing by the Guinness Book of Records.

The Big Swing allows you to take a thrilling leap in a 220m arc where you soar into the centre of the stadium. Not for the faint-hearted. Price: R695, no one under 10.

Another activity for those with a head for heights is the Adventure Walk. Up about 500 steps, the organisers claim it’s a “leisurely 20-minute walk” to the top, where there are breathtaking views and photo opportunities.

All Adventure Walkers are issued with safety equipment and, under the watchful eye of qualified instructors, a group of up to nine people at a time can make their way to the top.

It’s best to wear appropriate footwear (trainers or flat, closed shoes). Price: R90, no children under 10.

If that is a bit too hectic for you, you can take a Segway tour on these electric-powered personal transport devices. Prices range from R195 for a short stadium glide to R600 for an all-inclusive glide, which includes Golden Mile attractions. No children under 10.

There are also a number of stadium tours and you can hire bikes to potter around the area. - Saturday Star
