Guided bush walks are one of the highlights at Tuningi Safari Lodge, bringing visitors up close and personal with Africa and providing a unique opportunity to see, smell and hear the bush in a totally different way.

Tuningi Safari Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the few lodges offering guided bush walks to guests in the reserve.

The walks, which will be lead by a trained and armed guide, allow visitors to experience the often-overlooked aspects of the African bush not seen from game vehicles. Walking provides the ideal opportunity to learn about and see the smaller animals and insects that contribute to Madikwe’s rich biodiversity. By bringing you one step closer to the environment, bush walks allow you to smell, hear and experience the bush in a completely unique and different way.

Guests also benefit enormously from the wealth of knowledge that the guides have to share. This means that the bush walks are a truly educational experience, as the guides are able to recognise the smallest signs of animal life and are well-versed in the minute details of the various plants, insects and birds.

The walks also provide bird lovers with a rare chance to both see and hear the abundant birdlife for which the Madikwe Reserve has become known.

The walks are also tailored to suit the needs and fitness levels of the group – anything from half an hour to two-and-a-half-hours, depending on the request from the group. The group will either depart from Tuningi Lodge or from a designated place in the reserve following a short game drive.

Only small groups with a maximum of six people can be accommodated at one time and for safety reasons the walks can only take people older than sixteen. (By law, children under the age of 16 may not walk in Big 5 reserves). People over 60 years of age require a medical clearance letter from their Doctor to certify that they are able to walk in a Big 5 game reserve.

The walks are free of charge, being covered by the rate paid for accommodation, meals and activities at Tuningi Safari Lodge. Walks can be booked directly with the lodge upon booking or arrival.
