Cape Town International Airport was this week named the Best Airport in Africa at the Skytrax World Airports Awards in Vienna, Austria.

At the ceremony on Thursday night the city’s airport also took the prize for Best Airport in Africa for Staff Service Excellence.

The awards ceremony, which has been held annually since 1999, marked the end of the week-long Passenger Terminal Expo 2012.

It is the fourth time Cape Town’s airport has received the Best Airport in Africa award, having won it in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Deon Cloete, general manager of the Airports Company SA, said the awards were the result of the “collective effort of all the good men and women serving at (the airport)”.

In February, Cape Town airport was named the Airports Council International’s Best Airport in Africa, and in 2010 it was the first airport on the continent to be included in the Top Ten Airports in the World, taking 10th spot.

Deborah Francis, acting communications manager at the airport, said: “It clearly demonstrates that we are able and are competing in the global arena. We are proud that we are able to do our bit as the gateway to Cape Town and the Western Cape.” - Sunday Argus
