January sees the anniversary of the Anglo-Zulu War, and Endumeni Tourism has put together an interesting package for January 16 to 25 for those who like to combine travel with history.

On the 17th, the Natal Carbineers will exercise their right to the Freedom of Dundee with a march-past together with other invited regiments. There will also be a re-enactment by the Dundee Diehards and Zulu warriors and a commemoration ball at the Battlefields Country Lodge.

Those wanting to trace history on foot can participate in an early morning walk along the Bridle Path (15km) on January 18, while the 19th sees eminent international guest speakers addressing the International Conference on the Zulu War. On the 20th there will be tours to Helpmekaar, Cannibal Rock, Fugitives Drift, Fort Bengough or the Cultural Day at Blood River; while on the 21st you can camp at Rorke's Drift.

A wreath-laying ceremony will take place on the 22nd at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift with Zulu iButho as guard of honour, while on the 23rd there will be tours to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, Fugitives Trail, and a hike to Anstey's Stand.

The David Rattray Memorial half-marathon from Isandlwana to Rorke's Drift takes place on the 24th as well as a tour to Spioenkop for the 109th anniversary of that Anglo-Boer War battlefield. The anniversary ends on the January 25 with a Moth parade at Rorke's Drift.
