Keep tabs on your passport

If you do not have a passport, get one immediately. It is essential that every South African has a passport because there are many enticing countries to visit just beyond our borders, like Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe (specifi-cally the Victoria Falls area, which is great value and a beautiful place to visit).

The town of Victoria Falls and the entire tourism zone along the Zambezi seems a world apart from President Robert Mugabe's despotic rule.

And tourism is keeping thousands of Zimbabweans alive by providing them with jobs.

Then there is Zambia, which is also just across the way.

You never know when a trip beyond our borders might happen, so if you do not have a valid passport, get to a Department of Home Affairs office. Perhaps you could find a smaller one somewhere nearby, then you won't have to stand in a queue.

Also remember that some countries demand that your passport is valid for six months after your planned trip, while others demand that you have two full open pages available.

So sort out your passport.
