Low-cost airline Mango started flying from Lanseria airport near Johannesburg to Cape Town on Wednesday, the airline said.

The airline would operate three flights daily to Cape Town.

Said Mango CEO Nico Bezuidenhout: “Lanseria airport is geographically well positioned to serve growing markets to the north and west of Johannesburg as well as the southern and western areas of Pretoria.

“With the airport's extended parking facilities and improved terminal building, I am confident that we will blossom in tandem with our new partner's increase in available infrastructure to serve growing capacity.”

Spokesman Hein Kaiser said bookings for the first flight from Lanseria to Cape Town opened three weeks ago.

Mango sold 25 percent of its launch capacity during the first 48 hours with subsequent booking volumes indicating positive forward growth.

He said Mango had carried in excess of seven million guests over the past four years and had launched a route between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein.

“The introduction of a fifth aircraft and new port of operation will further increase our ability to service the domestic market effectively and affordably.” - Sapa
