With the backing of former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu, thousands of South Africans and foreign tourists, the second round of voting began in the final push for Table Mountain to be one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

The New 7 Wonders of Nature competition is the second contest organised by the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation. The first was the New Seven Wonders of the World, in which millions of votes were cast online and by phone across the world to replace the better-known Seven Wonders of the World.

Voters globally will know on July 21 whether Table Mountain has made it through the first phase of voting to become a finalist.

A public voting station was at the Sanparks information centre in Tafelberg Road and another at Boulders Beach, Simon's Town, to attract passers-by.

Table Mountain represents South Africa in competition with 260 other nominees from across the globe. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is spearheading the campaign. Yesterday it rewarded voters with chocolate-coated treats.

Table Mountain National Park communications manager Phumeza Mgxashe manned the Boulders Beach polling station throughout the day.

Mgxashe said many people, including tourists from abroad, were "more than happy to vote for Table Mountain".

Mgxashe said there was a good chance Table Mountain would make it into the second round, believing the support from radio stations and private companies had helped bolster the vote for the national heritage site.

Sabine Lehmann, CEO of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, said Table Mountain would need the help of foreign voters to guarantee a place in the top seven.

Nina Schwiers, an 18-year-old German exchange student staying with a foster family from Jeffreys Bay, was cheerful as she voted for both Table Mountain and Germany's Black Forest at the Boulders Beach station.
