When passengers on the R.M.S. Titanic sat down to lunch on April 14, 1912, few could have imagined the meal would be their last.

It’s hard to believe any surviving passengers would later have remembered what they ate that day, given the terror and confusion of the sinking.

But now, thanks to a memorabilia auction, details of the menu have emerged. Those wealthy enough to have paid for a first-class ticket started with a Cockie Leekie soup, followed by brill, corned beef or “chicken a la Maryland”. The main was mutton, and there was custard pudding or apple meringue pastry for dessert and a cheese-board.

All food was included in the price of a ticket, but iced draught Munich lager was thruppence a tankard. These rather mouth-watering dishes were printed on a menu which has been in the possession of the family of Titanic survivor Ruth Dodge, from San Fransisco, for 100 years.

It is expected to fetch £100,000 when it’s auctioned on the centenary of the ship’s sinking. A sum that would buy you an awful lot of that Munich lager. - Daily Mail
