Table Mountain received a record 116,000 tourists in December, the mountain's aerial cable company said.

This number surpassed the previous high of 112,000 tourists in December 2006, said spokeswoman Collette Van Aswegen.

About 80 percent of visitors over the festive season were local tourists.

The mountain was provisionally named one of the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” in a global poll late last year.

The increase in visitors could be attributed to this accolade, and to stretches of good weather and the increased use of online booking facilities.

Van Aswegen said that in December 2010 there were 70,000 visitors because of unpleasant weather. - Sapa
