Global Responsible Tourism week kicked off with the announcement of Mdumbi Backpackers as the newest Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) certified tourism business.

Mdumbi Backpackers is on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape.

Hyman van Zyl, co-owner of Mdumbi Backpackers, said that their affiliation with FTTSA was “truly a surprising experience, receiving such efficient support throughout the process, and the thoroughness. We learned so much and Mdumbi Backpackers is definitely a better place now with things sorted out that been a long time waiting and we weren’t sure how to address them”.

Lisa Scriven, FTTSA certification manager, said that Mdumbi Backpackers was certainly a leader in sustainable business practices in the country.

Scriven said: “Mdumbi’s commitment and efforts to leverage tourism opportunities for the benefit of the area is evident in every aspect of their operations. They understand the bigger picture and have had a positive impact on the community – one which had previously been almost completely excluded from the region’s economic activities.”
