The case of a teenager’s tragic death after taking a selfie at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court has sparked widespread outrage, as the accused hitman, Erika Terry, a woman, awaits a bail decision.
The magistrate has postponed the ruling, and Terry’s fate will be decided next week.
Avuyile Dlomo, 17, was killed after allegedly being targeted by Terry, who is said to have been hired for the murder following a selfie Dlomo took on March 7 during an appearance by one of the suspects in the court. At the time the suspects believed that he was being photographed and wanted to punish her. Then, several days later, Dlomo was attacked by four men at a family store before being shot dead at her home in Sobantu Township, an event that has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Tension boiled over in court when the magistrate announced that the bail decision would be delayed. A group of residents from Sobantu Township, many affiliated with the ANC’s Moses Mabhida Region, expressed their anger and disappointment at the court’s decision to withhold bail. They condemned the murder, which followed Dlomo’s innocent act of taking a selfie, and vowed to continue their calls for justice. The magistrate is expected to deliver the final ruling on Monday.
