The landscape of South African literature is witnessing a dramatic shift as renowned publisher and writer Melinda Ferguson declares her independence with the launch of her new publishing venture, Melinda Ferguson Books, along with her audacious imprint Ride or Die Press. This bold decision marks a significant turning point for Ferguson, a passionate advocate for authentic, courageous storytelling who is well-known for her ability to spotlight emerging talent and challenge conventional narratives.
“This moment has been a long time coming,” Ferguson states, reflecting on her journey. “I’ve worked alongside some of the biggest names in local publishing. Along the way, I’ve paid my dues and built my brand. Now it’s time to fly solo.”
Ferguson's career began with a Honours degree in Publishing from Wits University, which she completed in 2012. Shortly thereafter, she teamed up with Jacana Media to establish MF Books Joburg. Her ventures continued to flourish, culminating in a joint partnership with NB Publishers in 2020.
Over the years, Ferguson has accrued an impressive portfolio, with more than 100 published titles under her belt. Her catalogue includes significant works like the award-winning "Rape: A South African Nightmare" by Dr Pumla Dineo Gqola, which clinched the 2016 Sunday Times Alan Paton Award.
Ferguson is stepping into her new role with a strong start; her inaugural title as an independent publisher, “SOL – My friend and adversary” by Peter Venison, has emerged as a national bestseller. However, perhaps the most highly anticipated release under her new banner is the compelling memoir “UNDONE: Healing from botched cosmetic surgery” authored by Michelle Roniak, which is poised to confront the societal pressures and ramifications surrounding beauty standards.
Melinda Ferguson Books aims to continue her legacy of championing fearless and pertinent narratives across various genres, including memoir, social commentary, and select fiction. To ensure the broad reach of her publications, Ferguson has partnered with Protea Distributors for distribution, allowing her titles to reach an even wider audience.
Having built a reputation for both disruption and igniting national discourse, Ferguson’s next chapter promises to be an intriguing voyage, teeming with potential impact on the literary scene. Readers and industry insiders alike will be keenly watching how she shapes the future of publishing in South Africa.
