THIS weekend signals the start of the epic 3,300-nautical-mile race to Rio de Janeiro, marking the beginning of the iconic Cape2Rio race. Scheduled to set off on Saturday, 27 December 2025, this race promises not only to connect two of the world’s most famous cities but also to challenge the limits of maritime endurance.
First held in 1971, the Cape2Rio race has steadily garnered attention as a premier event in the offshore sailing calendar, attracting world-class sailors and adventurers from around the globe. Organised by the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) and supported by headline sponsor Alexforbes, along with the City of Cape Town and South African Airways, the race encapsulates the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that characterises ocean sailing.
This year’s race boasts an impressive international presence, including two Brazilian boats: Audaz, a competitor from the 2023 race, and Esperança, both currently en route from Porto Alegre to Cape Town. However, a notable highlight is the Alexforbes Angel Wings, a youth development crew from the RCYC Sailing Academy. This team’s participation not only showcases resilience and opportunity but also signifies a promising future for South African sailing.
The Alexforbes Angel Wings crew, comprising six talented sailors, is making history, with four of its members being women. This move is a significant step forward in promoting gender diversity in the sport, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusivity in sailing. The team includes Skipper Sibusiso Sizatu (33), along with crew members Philasande Gwala (24), Yonela Temela (25), Sesona Ntsaluba (21), and Renaldo Mohale (32), with Yobanathi Klaas (20) serving as the reserve sailor.
Sizatu expressed pride in leading the Angel Wings crew, underscoring the significance of this responsibility. “This race demands focus, resilience, and respect for the ocean. My role is to guide the crew through that challenge, helping them apply what they have learnt and grow through the experience,” he said. His confidence in the crew’s preparation is palpable as they gear up for the start line.
In a reflective moment during an interview earlier this year, crew member Yonela Temela recounted her journey in sailing, which began in 2016. “When starting something new, you don't know what's happening… we used to get bruises, but then as time went by, the bruises stopped because I understood what was happening, and then I made friends as well,” she shared. Temela highlighted the rigorous training and safety preparation involved in preparing for the Cape2Rio challenge, acknowledging both the exhilaration and apprehension that come with the territory.
Viresh Maharaj, CEO of Alexforbes Retail, remarked on the potential of the Alexforbes Angel Wings crew, stating, “Their dedication shows how preparation and persistence can shape stronger futures, whether in sailing or in personal development. We are proud to support a team that demonstrates what disciplined effort can achieve.”
City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed pride in hosting such a prestigious event. "Cape Town is proud to host Cape2Rio, one of the world’s most prestigious ocean races. This event showcases our city on the global stage and celebrates its vibrant maritime culture and heritage.”
